Visual aids are objects or graphic materials teachers use to help create a mental image in the minds of their students. One of the best ways to ensure success for all learners is to present information in different formats. Teachers who incorporate visuals in their lessons augment the student's learning potential because they reinforce the message, clarify points, and help create enthusiasm. The old adage that "a picture is worth a thousand words" still rings true, especially in today's image-submerged society.
Research indicates that three days after an oral presentation students will retain approximately 10% of the information but combine oral with visuals and the retention rate goes up to over 65%. Students are more likely to retain what was taught if they experience the learning in more than one modality. By including visuals in your daily lessons student learning and retention will be enhanced. A lesson which includes visuals engages the eyes as well as the ears and helps keep the classroom focused. A study conducted by the 3M Company concluded that using colorful visuals measurably increases the impact of a lesson.
Maps and models give students replicas of objects to study. Geographical and topographical maps not only provide visual support for your class, but they also provide students with an opportunity to interact with a tangible object during a largely intangible lesson. When consistently exposed to maps, students begin to internalize the geographical features associated with their study, allowing then to make connections and conceptualize ideas.
Models are also common to science classes and they bring the flat images of a science textbook into a three-dimensional space. Students interact with the model and develop a deeper understanding of the object or concept. Large-scale models of cells, bacteria, atoms (as our solar system is displayed in the hallway below) enagage the visual and tactile learners.
